About Tutera

Tutera was founded in 1985 by former physician Dominic โ€œDocโ€ Tutera, who after retiring, turned his focus to senior care alongside his wife Lucille, blending their health care knowledge with a shared love for people. Together, they created communities that felt more like family, where compassion and personal connection were at the heart of everything they did. From day one, Tutera was built on the foundation of trust, meaningful relationships and the belief that every resident deserved to be treated like family. After Dominicโ€™s passing, Lucille continued their shared mission, ensuring that the values they held so dear remain the guiding light of Tuteraโ€™s care.

Today, nearly 40 years later, that same dedication continues to be the heart of Tuteraโ€™s mission. With more than 70 communities across the Midwest and thousands of employees, we have grown substantially, but our core values have remained the same. Families put their trust in us to provide not just superior senior care, but compassionate, personalized care that honors each residentโ€™s unique story.

Our team members take this responsibility seriously, working tirelessly to ensure that every senior feels safe, respected and cared for โ€“ just as Doc Tutera envisioned all those years ago.

Vision, Mission, Values

A logo with the word "YOUNITE." The "O" in "YOUNITE" contains a green leaf on top, overlapping blue and red shapes on the left, and a green shape in the middle. The text is in dark brown, with the "U" in red.

At Tutera, we recognize that each resident brings a lifetime of unique experiences, memories and personal stories, all of which contribute to who they are today. We believe these rich life stories are invaluable and deserve to be cherished and honored. This idea is at the heart of our YOUNITE philosophy โ€“ a signature initiative that goes beyond typical senior care. YOUNITE is designed to help us deeply connect with each resident on a personal level by discovering their interests, preferences and life experiences.

Through meaningful conversations and attentive listening, we aim to build strong, authentic relationships that make each individual feel valued and understood. Whether itโ€™s learning about a lifelong passion or simply understanding their daily preferences, the YOUNITE philosophy allows us to tailor our care and services to honor each personโ€™s individuality, ensuring that their time with us is not only comfortable but deeply fulfilling.

Our vision is to embody the YOUNITE philosophy in every decision we make, every single day. Rooted in genuine respect, YOUNITE guides us in building personal connections with both residents and team members. By taking the time to understand your individual needs and preferences, we actively listen and respond. You are the driving force behind everything we do.

Tutera communities offer various types of senior care. The main differences between independent living, assisted living and memory care for seniors lie in the level of support provided and the focus of care. Many of our communities offer more than one level of care. The main types of care are:

  • INDEPENDENT LIVING
  • ASSISTED LIVING
  • MEMORY CARE
  • RAPID RECOVERY & REHABILITATION CENTERS

WHO ITโ€™S FOR:
Seniors who are generally healthy, active and can manage most of their daily activities independently.

SERVICES:
Independent living is designed for those who want a maintenance-free lifestyle with social and recreational activities but do not require help with daily personal care. Our communities offer amenities such as housekeeping, transportation, dining and access to social events.

FOCUS:
Enhancing convenience, offering social engagement and promoting a sense of community while allowing residents to retain full independence.

LIVING SPACES:
Residents live in private or shared apartments that are equipped for aging in place, but care services are not provided.

EXPLORE FURTHER

WHO ITโ€™S FOR:
Seniors who need some help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, medication management or mobility but do not require 24-hour medical care.

SERVICES:
Assisted living provides a balance between independence and support. Team members are available to assist with personal care, provide meals, monitor health and ensure safety. Residents have access to social activities, transportation and a supportive environment.

FOCUS:
Helping residents maintain as much independence as possible while offering assistance with day-to-day tasks that may have become challenging.

LIVING SPACES:
Residents live in private or shared apartments with easy access to caregiving support and communal areas for dining, activities for assisted living and socialization.

Take a closer look

WHO ITโ€™S FOR:
Seniors with Alzheimerโ€™s disease or other forms of dementia who require specialized care and a secure environment.

SERVICES:
Memory care communities provide 24-hour supervision and care tailored to individuals with dementia. Our team members are trained in dementia care, and the environment is designed to minimize confusion and promote safety. Memory care also offers structured activities to stimulate cognitive function and improve quality of life.

FOCUS:
Ensuring safety, providing specialized care and engaging residents in activities that are designed for those with memory impairments.

LIVING SPACES:
Residents live in secured areas with private or shared rooms, often designed with dementia-friendly features such as clear signage, easy navigation and enclosed outdoor spaces for safety.

SERVICES:
Rapid recovery and rehabilitation services provide the various levels of support that recovering residents require โ€“ everything from on-site physical, occupational and speech therapy to access to physicians and caregivers to medication management.

FOCUS:
Ensuring safety and providing specialized care for a safe, quick and healthy recovery after illness or injury.

LIVING SPACES:
Private or shared rooms with easy access to health care support and communal areas for dining, activities and socialization.

SEE HOW IT WORKS

In summary, independent living is ideal for seniors who are able to manage their daily routines with little to no assistance, while assisted living offers support with everyday tasks for those who need extra help. Memory care is specifically designed for individuals with cognitive impairments, providing specialized attention in a secure and structured setting.

Rapid recovery and rehabilitation centers are tailored to each seniorโ€™s unique health journey, focusing on rest, recovery and rehabilitation, with the goal of restoring optimal health and facilitating a smooth return home.
