National Assisted Living Week

In September, senior communities across the country celebrated National Assisted Living Week! This year’s theme focused on “Joyful Moments” and the way assisted living communities help older adults to find moments of joy in each and every day. National Assisted Living Week is a time for assisted living residents, their families, staff, volunteers and community members to recognize the role senior communities play in caring for America’s older generations.

Assisted living communities across the country found creative ways to celebrate the week. At Mission Chateau Senior Living Community, they held a crazy sock contest, which brought lots of moments of joy and laughter! At Country Gardens Assisted Living Community, residents celebrated with pancakes and pajamas, and a local artist helped residents make hanging banners. At Oakley Courts Assisted Living & Memory Care Community, residents dressed in their 1970s best!

While celebrating the contributions to community and senior health made by assisted living communities, it is also important to discuss what assisted living communities provide, how they offer life enrichment and what assisted living activities are best for your loved ones.

Finding Life Enrichment

Finding life enrichment during the golden years of life is not just a matter of fun – it is also a matter of health. Maintaining an active lifestyle has benefits in all areas of mental, emotional and physical health. These benefits include:

  • Reduces the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Reduces high blood pressure
  • Increases mood and overall confidence
  • Helps to maintain a healthy weight
  • Decreases cancer risk
  • Combats diabetes and heart disease
  • Reverses bone loss and fights arthritis
  • Builds muscle that improves balance and reduces joint pain

Creating moments of joy through life enrichment and assisted living events is a large focus in assisted living communities. At Oakley Courts Assisted Living & Memory Care Community, residents enjoy amenities like beautiful outdoor gathering areas and a beauty salon and barbershop to keep everyone looking and feeling their best!

Assisted Living Activities

Assisted living activities and programs are a large part of life in a senior community. At Country Gardens Assisted Living Community, residents have lots of opportunities to make new friends, while also keeping their minds and bodies moving. Assisted living activities at Country Gardens include:

  • Gardening and walking clubs
  • Pet therapy
  • Live entertainment
  • Services and spiritual studies
  • Arts and crafts
  • Ice cream socials
  • Fitness programs
  • Bridge and bingo
  • Wii bowling
  • Three chef-prepared, nutritious meals daily
  • Community councils

Activities for seniors in assisted living focus on engagement, mental stimulation, safety and socialization. Many seniors decide to make the move to assisted living when they are no longer able to safely live on their own. At communities, like Mission Chateau Senior Living Community, safety is a top priority. Reducing the risk of falls, keeping seniors from isolating and supporting seniors in the activities of daily living are all components of the safety tools in place. These tools include:

  • Individualized care plans
  • An emergency call system
  • Medication management
  • Help with the activities of daily living
  • 24/7 on-site licensed and certified nursing staff

The assisted living calendar at Mission Chateau is also full of options and opportunities for movement, friendship and learning new things. With assisted living activities to fit every level of physical abilities, the choices at Mission Chateau include:

  • Happy hours
  • Guest speakers
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Book clubs
  • Gardening
  • Educational classes
